Vol. 9 "Various Books"

Introduced by DJ MURANAO

This is a column where people who are both self-confessed “travel lovers” and “experienced travelers” introduce their “top picks” that they discovered when they stayed at NIKKO STYLE NAGOYA.

<Reading at the hotel>

The bookshelves in the lobby lounge (communal lobby) of NIKKO STYLE NAGOYA are filled with a wide variety of books.

At first glance, they seem like part of the interior design, but the sophisticated selection offers plenty to read.
From books that make you rethink the NIKKO STYLE philosophy of “clothing, food, and shelter” to beautiful photo books capturing the world’s landscapes that spark the curiosity of travel enthusiasts.

Children’s picture books are available in both Japanese and foreign languages, reflecting the hotel’s hospitality. Picture books are not only available in the lobby lounge but also at the front desk, so if you can’t find a book suitable for your child’s age, feel free to ask for assistance.

Additionally, the selection of books on music and crafts is another hallmark of Nikko Style. Not only can you enjoy carefully curated music and touch craft items, but you can also deepen your knowledge, which is a delightful bonus.

The collection of books about Nagoya, the local area, is particularly impressive. From easy-to-read special issues of magazines to photo books beautifully capturing various tourist spots, books about Nagoya cuisine and other gourmet topics, and even old maps, you can learn about Nagoya from every angle!

I learned that you can ask the front desk to bring any books that catch your eye to your room, so I borrowed a few and decided to read them during my break after breakfast and before check-out.

First, I read a book about Nagoya’s traditional sweets called “Anko no Hon” and I was excited to learn about the depth of these sweets that I had never known before! I decided to buy some traditional sweets as souvenirs today.

After that, I skimmed through “Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth” (by Buckminster Fuller) written in 1963. The content was a little difficult, but perhaps because I was in a quiet room away from my daily life, I was able to concentrate and get drawn into the story!

Finally, I read “Fushigi na Kaidan” (Mysterious staircase) and “Tobidasu! 3D Art Picture Book: Himitsu no Chikashitsu (Secret basement) ” (both by Hideyuki Nagai) with my children. These were the first books I had seen with such mechanisms, and I was fascinated by how picture books have evolved.

Even books that you casually read with your children while traveling can become memories years later.

There were so many other books that caught my eye that I couldn’t finish reading them all during my stay, so I hope to go back for another reading trip.

(Note: These four books are only available in Japanese at the hotel.)

*****

As she mentioned, there are many books available in the communal lobby on the first floor. All together, there are probably more than 300 books.

In line with the hotel’s theme of being a “unique hotel dedicated to coffee and music,” we’ve carefully selected books related to music and coffee, as well as others on art, architecture, travel, and a deep dive into Nagoya culture.
There are also picture books with little surprises that both adults and children can enjoy together, books filled with interesting trivia, and translated editions of popular books and photo books for international guests.

On the bright side, it’s like a treasure trove filled with discoveries; on the downside, it’s a bit of a niche selection.
We hope you’ll enjoy discovering a book that’s a bit different from your usual reads during your stay at the hotel.
We also recommend spending your Saturday nights sipping drinks while flipping through the pages to the live DJ music!
